Emmieâs Test
Emmie and Carmen clutched stacks of flyers featuring Jeanâs smiling face and walked through the bustling quad, pausing to pin flyers to cluttered bulletin boards, signposts, and trees. A crisp wind fought to steal the flyers from their hands.
Emmie approached a small group of students chatting while sitting on the lawn. âExcuse me,â she said, leaning down and handing them a flyer. âMy roommate is missing. Have you seen her?â The students dropped the flyer on the ground, shook their heads, and returned to their conversations. Emmie turned toward Carmen. âNo one cares. Their fellow student is missinâ, and they couldnât care less,â she huffed.
âThey donât know her like we do. Besides, this is a large campus. What are the odds they would see her even if she wasnât missing? I donât think thereâs a good chance weâll find her this way.â
âAre you saying you wanna quit?â
âIâm not saying we should quit. At least, not yet. Iâm saying that we should be realistic and not expect to find her by handing out flyers. I mean, do you really think she is wandering around campus after being in a horrific car crash? I donât think so,â Carmen said.
âYou canât be sure who may have information. Maybe another student witnessed the accident. Or perhaps sheâs roaming around campus after sufferinâ from amnesia because of the car accident.â
Carmen chuckled. âReally? You donât really believe that, do you?â
âIâm just sayinâ, you never know what youâll find,â Emmie said as she shoved a flyer at a student passing by her. The other student batted his arm at the flyer, forcing it to float through the air. âWe wonât find anything if we donât look.â
âI donât mind looking. I just think we need to adjust our expectations.â
After canvassing for a couple of hours, Emmie received an email notification on her phone from the Starlight Organization. She read the notification and smiled. âIt looks like I made the cut.â
Carmen scrunched her brows. âThe cut?â
âYeah, check your email. I just received a link from that secret society to schedule my health exams. Tell me which date you prefer. Then we can go together.â
Carmen slid her phone out of her stylish leather purse and scanned her email messages. âI donât see anything. Maybe they didnât select me for the next step.â
âCheck your Spam folder.â
âI did. Nothingâs there.â
âThey might not have notified everyone at the same time. Keep checking.â
Carmen sighed. âI wonder why they didnât pick me.â
âJust keep checking your email.â Emmie was excited about the opportunity to join the Starlight Organizationâs student group. As she scheduled her health exams, she noticed an option to consent to an âenhanced evaluation.â Curious, she checked the box, wondering if it had anything to do with the strange tech she glimpsed at the interview. She couldnât wait to see what was in store for her and if it could lead her to Jeanâs whereabouts.
